Types of catheter

Intermittent (single-use) catheters — inserted to drain the bladder and removed right away. The most common choice for self-catheterization. Available uncoated, pre-lubricated, or hydrophilic (slippery when wet for easier, more comfortable insertion).
Indwelling (Foley) catheters — stay in place with a small balloon and connect to a drainage bag for continuous drainage.
External (condom/Texas) catheters — a non-invasive sheath worn over the penis that connects to a leg bag.

Straight vs. coudé tip
A straight tip suits most users. A coudé (curved) tip is designed to navigate a tighter or angled urethra — often recommended for men with an enlarged prostate (BPH) or where a straight catheter is difficult to pass.

Choosing the right French (Fr) size
Catheters are sized on the French scale (also written Fr or CH), where each unit is 1⁄3 of a millimetre in diameter, and the sizes are colour-coded by the manufacturer. As a rule, choose the smallest size that drains freely and comfortably. Typical starting points: 8–10 Fr for children, 12–14 Fr for women, and 12–16 Fr for men — always follow your clinician’s recommendation.
